One Review for Spelling Notebook App

  1. Nalini Malhotra says:
    User friendliness
    Educational value
    Language appropriate for ESL students
    Student reporting and tracking
    App performance

    What you like about it?
It is easy to create, edit and delete word lists. Each word selected from the dictionary comes with an audio recording and an opportunity for the student to record their own voice too to aid pronunciation. Test results can be emailed to the teacher and themselves to track their progress showing the results of each attempt for each word in the list. Once a student has learned to listen and spell a word correctly, a star appears next to the word in the list. In my opinion 'stars' are ageless with most students appreciating some token for effort exerted.

What you don’t like about it?
Can't think of anything to say here!

How would you use this app with your students?
I would probably use this in combination with A+ Pro Flashcards app to reinforce vocab presented and as a self-study app for the students.

Tips you can share on its use?
When creating wordlists, students can import words from other lists where there is a cross over.

There are a wide variety of Spelling Apps out there with many aimed at primary school aged children and one of the biggest criticisms, brought to light through a focus group discussion conducted as part of my research into the use of graded readers for extensive reading with Emirati learners for my MA, was that many of the texts available for Foundation Level 2 students were deemed too childish for them. As a result, my recommendation of this app has taken that into consideration with the design more appropriate for a young adult market.
